LED display grayscale

LED display grayscale
LED display products are getting more and more popular. They are using for different event shows, TV studio, traffic control room, advertising signage, etc. And the users has higher requirements to these LED display products than before. For example, few years ago, a LED display should have 12bits grayscale. Now many LED displays even the outdoor bill board should have 13bits grayscale. And if it comes of the high-end event LED display or TV studio LED display, the grayscale needs at least 14bits. Here we discuss LED display technology -- grayscale.

What is grayscale to the LED display?

In color science, grayscale is a range of shades of gray without apparent color. The darkest possible shade is black, which is the total absence of reflected light. The lightest possible shade is white, the total transmission of light at all visible wavelengths. Intermediate shades of gray are represented by equal brightness levels of three primary colors (red, green and blue) for transmitted light. The grayscale intensity has 256 shades of gray from black to white. As all colors comes from RGB primary colors, that means the highest grayscale of a full color image is 24bits ( 256 x 256 x 256). So for LED display products, when it gets higher gray scale, the color is more rich and vivid.

How does grayscale affect the visual effect of LED display products?

See the above of picture. When the grayscale is too low, some of the colors can't be reflected in the system, so the display appears like ghost image.

What levels of grayscale should be proper for different kinds of LED display products.

1) For most of LED displays including outdoor LED display and indoor LED displays, 13bit grayscale would be enough. In fact, if the screen is not showing much gradient images, a 13bits grayscale display system would make the screen look really nice.

2)When the screen needs to show lots of gradient image, the screen needs 14bits grayscale or higher.

How to increase the grayscale?

1) Hardware. Driving IC plays a key role for grayscale in the display system. Meanwhile, the display control system (sending card and receiving card) will also affect the grayscale a lot. What's more, a good PCB design also could helps to increase the grayscale. So if you need high grayscale, you need to use high-end driving IC like MBI5252, MBI5153, etc. And you need to have a good display control system and great PCB design.

2) Software. The display control software would also be very important to the grayscale. The display software comes with the display hardware. So a good display control hardware is necessary.
